Abstract

There have been an increasing number of researches on narratives in bioethics recently, including the ones that explore the possibility of bioethics education through narratives, the ones that discuss narrative as a medium of virtue in medicine, and the attempts to acquire better understanding of patients by means of narrative analysis. Narratives can be especially important in relation to the principle of respect for autonomy, because they can provide some clues to the patient¡¯s self-understanding when it is difficult to discern which decisions (or acts) are truly autonomous, and accordingly, which is to be respected. Considering the truth and accuracy issue inherent in narratives that are in nature selective and interpretive, the defense for the reliability, value, and truth of narratives are much needed. This article responds to that need by providing a careful examination of the discourse regarding self-understanding and narrative truth.
